From World War II to the Cold War: An Essex Story of Service, Determination, and the Anglo-American Spirit

RAF Wethersfield is a significant place, an important airfield during World War II where its service to Britain and the United States stretched on into the future for the duration of the Cold War.

With hundreds of old airfields and ruins scattered across East Anglia and west into the Midlands, RAF Wethersfield remains unique with runways and buildings standing testament to generations of Americans and their commitment to the British and the American people.

Today no light wartime bombers are heard along the runways or jet fighters streaking across the skies, but the lingering memory of pilots, ground crew, and countless thousands of others remain in the hearts and minds of the British people today.

Since the early 1950s, thousands of American families came to live at RAF Wethersfield and the surrounding communities. It proved to be a special time, a special place, never to be forgotten.

WWII Wethersfield began a half century of service to Britain, the United States, and the free world . The history that played out at RAF Wethersfield and the surrounding communities stretches from 1941 and across the twentieth century. That history defines the people who grew up there, those who lived out their lives there, and those who came to serve there.

RAF Wethersfield has a unique heritage that demonstrates the Anglo-American spirit across generations of Essex communities, military families, and RAF and U.S. air and ground forces.

Today the airfield is consecrated ground, a place from which many made the ultimate sacrifice, a place of remembrance for generations who made a difference in the world. Many of the buildings remain scattered across this pleasant meadow land. History lingers here and whispers to us of a time when courage and valor played out from this place.

The runways stretch far into the distance and stand as silent reminders of a time when the future of the world was held in the balance, when stalwart men and women answered the call to serve something larger than themselves. This is their story.

The post Wethersfield at War first appeared on Old Segundo Productions.

Flight Surgeon Thurman Shuller, War, Medicine, and a Life of Service

Born in 1914, Thurman Shuller grew up on a modest farm near Ozark, Arkansas.

Through hard work and a commitment to education, all six of the Shuller brothers earned a college education that led each to a life of success in career and family away from the farm .

Thurman pursued a medical degree at the University of Arkansas and later served a two-year internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans.

With war clouds on the horizons, Dr. Thurman Shuller volunteered for active service in the Army as a surgeon at the Las Vegas Gunnery School and later attended the Military Aviation Medicine course Randolph Air Field in Texas to become a flight surgeon.

Lt. Shuller is assigned as squadron surgeon in the 369th Bomb Squadron, 306th Bomb Group at Wendover, Utah. Soon he is elevated as the Group Surgeon and begins his historic journey as he and the rest of the Bomb Group departs for Thurleigh, England and combat in the European Theater of Operations.

First as Group Surgeon in the 306th, and later as the Chief Surgeon of the 1st Air Division, Lt. Colonel Shuller rises quickly as he influences policies at higher headquarters involving aircrew survival, tour limits, and improving conditions arising out of the Maximum Effort missions.

The flight surgeon in the motion picture, Twelve O'Clock High is based on Shuller during his time as Group Surgeon at the 306th Bomb Group at Thurleigh. He ended the war as a full colonel, going from 1st Lieutenant to Colonel in just four years.

Thurman Shuller was born in 1914 on a farm near Ozark, Arkansas. Nothing in his growing up years gave a clue to his future as a flight surgeon in World War II, one who would make a difference in the lives of thousands of men who crewed the heavy bombers over Nazi-occupied Europe. In those early days on the farm, young Thurman learned the value of hard work and acquired the discipline of meeting new challenges head on. Surrounded by his parents and five older brothers, Thurman grew up in a family committed to a profound work ethic and to education that would lead each brother to significant achievement and success in life.

This documentary film traces the story of Colonel Thurman Shuller that begins on a modest farm near Ozark, Arkansas and leads the young Thurman on a journey to a future in medicine and war. Along the way, he rises in the ranks of Army Air Force medical leadership and influences policies at Eighth Air Force headquarters involving aircrew survival, tour limits, and improving conditions arising out of the Maximum Effort missions. This is his story.

Fortress for Freedom traces the story of the 388th Bomb Group (H) from activation and training in the United States to combat operations in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. Based at Knettishall, east of Cambridge in wartime England, the men of the 388th took the war to German-ocuppied Europe. Beginning on July 17, 1943, the 388th flew 314 missions during three years of active operations. During the war, the Group suffered 91 aircraft lost, 524 men killed in action, 801 taken prisoner, and 2 missing. Supported by British families in the surrounding villages and towns, these young men of the 388th made a difference in the victory won in the skies over Europe. A unique look at the men who spear- headed the air war against Germany and the price that they had to pay.

Now for the first time Target for Today is available in a remastered DVD produced from the original film stock in the National Archives. Our digital artists have spent countless hours repairing and producing a new version of the World War II epic. Using the newest technology, Old Segundo has produced a version of Target for Today that is sharper and closer to the original than ever before. The clarity of the video and audio combine to bring back the drama of an Eighth Air Force mission, directed by William Keighley and his film crew in 1943 at bases across East Anglia and in combat over Europe. The film was released to American theaters in 1944.

In September 1939 Hitler invaded Poland and triggered World War II in Europe. The British gathered around their radios as they listened to the Prime Minister tell them that Britain was at war with Germany. In Bedford and throughout the surrounding villages and towns of Bedfordshire, British families listened soberly as the news sank in. Bedfordshire mobilized to do her part in those dark days leading to the Battle of Britain and Dunkirk, with the threat of invasion always present as each day brought renewed crisis. Soon the Yanks would come to Bedfordshire and, together with their British neighbors, they would fight the air war from those pleasant meadowlands spread across the countryside. This is the story of British families and young Americans in Bedfordshire who joined together in the struggle for victory in World War II.

The post Thurleigh at War first appeared on Old Segundo Productions.

World War II in Europe began in September 1939. In the villages near Attleborough and throughout the surrounding towns in County Norfolk, British families turned to wartime footing as their young men went to the forces, and each community struggled to transition to rationing, war work, and the constant threat of German attack from the air and from the sea.

In 1942 the first Yanks arrived in Britain, and they soon came to Norfolk where the American airfields rapidly appeared across the landscape and brought the Allied air war to hearth and home. This is the story of British families and young Americans in Norfolk who lived together on the battleline of the emerging air war. Together they formed a sense of community and place as each day brought new challenges of war.

A sneak preview trailer for Deenethorpe, the World War II story of the 401st Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. The film is currently available in its original full screen version. During spring 2022, a new widescreen version will be released.

Deenethorpe traces the story of the 401st Bomb Group (H) from activation and training in the United States to combat operations in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. Based at Deenethorpe, west of Cambridge in wartime England, the men of the 401st took the war to Germany. During combat operations, the 401st flew 254 missions and compiled the best bombing accuracy record for all B-17 bomb groups in the Eighth Air Force.

Together with British families in the surrounding villages and towns, these young Americans shared a common commitment to defeat the Nazi threat to mother England and free peoples everywhere. A unique look at the men who spearheaded the air war against Germany and the price that they had to pay.

The Second Air Division began operations in England with the arrival of the 93rd Bomb Group in 1942. Soon more B-24 bomb groups arrived as the Second Air Division began to establish its credentials at Ploesti and in the air war across German-held Europe. This documentary traces the story of the fourteen Liberator bomb groups in the Second Air Division. During the war the Liberators made their mark upon history, and today the victory won in the skies over Europe remains a significant part of the legacy left behind by the men of the Second Air Division.

Personal interviews, newly discovered photographs and archival footage tell the story of the Liberators and the men who flew them. A unique look back at life on their bases, their British neighbors, and the mission history of the Second Air Division in World War II.

The first ground and air elements of the 303rd Bomb Group arrived at Molesworth, England in October 1942–in time to begin air operations during the early stages of the Eighth Air Force’s campaign against Germany. High losses and the lack of fighter cover made the Hell’s Angels’ early missions a treacherous prelude for one of the most successful bomb groups in the Eighth Air Force.

This documentary traces the group’s early training in the United States and documents the remarkable record the group compiled on the air front against Germany. The film includes valuable eye witness accounts taken from the extraordinary oral history interviews recorded by the East Anglia Air War Project over two decades. Many of these air crews and ground personnel tell us their stories with clarity and drama as they take us back to their air war against Germany. With astonishing archival footage that brings the story of the Hell’s Angels back to life, this story of the air war delivers a new dimension to the American experience in World War II.
